Clipping your dogs toe-nails

Clipping your dog’s nails can be a very stressful experience.  One of the tricks is to do it often, as in every couple of weeks,  and always have treats ready.  Structure is good for your dog and making it as pleasant as possible will help you with future nail clippings. Once they get used to the process, it’ll be no big deal to them. If they have not been trimmed in  awhile, take it slow… as in do one or two as a time, and give your pup a break.  I like to have the dog sit down in between my legs and hold their front foot with my one hand and clip the nails with my other hand.  That works for me.  You may have a different position that works for you.  The idea is to hold their foot still, and clip the end off, where it starts to curve downward.  Clip and treat every nail if you have too. I can usually clip one paw and then give a treat now. Max would offer his paw to me to have his nails clipped. He loved the attention. :-) You don’t want to cut too much, as you may clip their quick. Clipping the quick will make them bleed a lot! It is painful for them. So, you might better clip more often, and take less off, so you don’t clip too close. If you do clip too close, then you  would need to apply some Quik Stop so they quit bleeding.   They will survive even if this unfortunate event happens.  Just take it slow and don’t be nervous and give them lots of hugs and treats.
